Lake District Trip 2019 – Day 2 – Helvellyn

So just on our second day of our holiday we decided to do a big round, hiking 4 mountains in one day! Our aim was to go up onto Helvellyn, via Grisedale Brow, the Hole in the Wall and Striding Edge, and to make our way back down via Grisedale Tarn and the Grisedale Valley.

We set off from Patterdale at 8:50am and the weather was gorgeous, with a frosty nip in the air but beautiful sunshine all around! Here was our views as we ascended up Grisedale Brow, looking back into Patterdale.

As we reached the Hole in the Wall, a coffee break was due before we tackled Striding Edge.

There was snow on the top of Helvellyn, the first of the season, so we were keen to see what sort of condition Striding Edge was in. Thankfully there wasn’t any snow but there was a healthy layer of ice for us to contend with. As we got ourselves to the half way point the light just illuminated Nethermost Cove in the most unusual way.

The final assent onto Helvellyn was in sight! From the top, the views were spectacular! I really wanted to capture an image of Striding Edge and Red Tarn, the view just sums up Helvellyn for me.

Once we had lunch we made our way over to Nethermost Pike, capturing this clear view of St Sunday Crag in the process.

We then continued onto High Crag and then Dollywagon before making our descent towards Grisedale Tarn and back into the Grisedale Valley.

We arrived back in Patterdale at 5:15pm, making a nice healthy 7 1/2 hour hike!
