Lake District Trip – Day 5 – Thirlmere, Grasmere & Rydal Water

Autumnal Rydal Water Tranquillity

After 3 gruelling days of hiking, we were keen to have a more relaxed day so decided to head out in to the car to a few beauty spots to capture some images. With this in mind, we set off the Thirlmere Reservoir. We parked up near Highpark Wood and made our way down to the Reservoir. As we approached the waters edge, it was getting close to 12 noon. The lighting was a little harsh and ‘contrasty’ and I was struggling to make anything work with the wide lens. I decided to switch to the long lens to create a more silhouetted image, taking advantage of the interesting sky and cloud formations.

It was time for lunch and we had already decided we wanted to go to Tweedies Bar in Grasmere! We headed off to Grasmere and took around this beautiful little village before tucking into some lunch!

We still had some daylight left and I was keen to capture some magic hour lighting if possible, so we decided to head down to Rydal Water. We parked up at the bottom of Rydal Water and walked though the woods to reach the waters edge. It was just beautiful, I set the camera up looking across to Dow Bank, Silver How & Lang How with Heron Island clearly in view with some foreground interest.

The sun kept coming in and out and I knew the shot wouldn’t work without the sun hitting the beautifully autumnal trees on Heron Island. So we waited and waited, and then, the sun appeared for 30 seconds, and I managed to capture the image below.

We then continued our way up Rydal Water, taking in the beautiful surroundings and autumnal scenes with the orange and red trees lining the banks and fells.

It was a glorious day, and a well deserved rest bite from hiking! We throughly enjoyed our trip to the Lake District and will be heading back there soon!

If you have enjoyed any of the images above they are all available as high quality prints for you to treasure in your home, from my Lake District Print Collection.
