Lake District Trip 2019 – Day 3 – Brothers Water Sunset

Brothers Water

Once we had completed our hike up and along High Street in the Far Eastern Fells, which you can read about here, I was keen to capture some sunset images across Brothers Water.

Brothers Water is a small body of water, situated just outside Hartsop, with the fells of Hartsop above How, Hart Crag and Dove Crag lining its banks. Sadly, as we started our descent from High Street via The Knott the sun started to duck behind the fells meaning we were too late!

All was not lost though as the sun continued for some time to illuminate the sky and clouds, creating a beautiful atmosphere to capture some fantastic silhouetted imaged of the fells and their reflections.

Making use of a polarising filter allowed me to control the amount of reflections on the water, along with the amount of detail you could see under the water. In addition to this, I used a longer shutter speed to make the water appear still, and really allow the reflections to pop out of the image.

I love the amount of detail you can see under the water in the image above, yet still see the reflections so clearly.

If it wasn’t for the small ripple of water along the ‘horizon’ line of the water, I don’t think this image would be as visually strong as it is. The ripple creates a very natural division between the fell and its reflection, and also balances the image from the shore line on the left hand side.

Brothers Water provided a great location and I will definitely be visiting again very soon!

If you have enjoyed any of the images above they are all available as high quality prints for you to treasure in your home, from my Lake District Print Collection.
