A Blog by the Wild and Woolly Walker.
After two fairly long walks, we were ready for a well deserved rest! Plus, storm Dennis was not being too kind and the rain showers were forecast all day. The only challenge I wanted was making a break for the car whilst trying to not get wet!
Rather than go for a hike, me and Dan decided to venture over to Loughrigg Tarn to give Dan a chance to grab a picture of two of the Langdale Pikes between rain showers. We found a convenient place nearby to park the car and it was just a short leisurely stroll to the tarn.
When we arrived, it was pretty much a washout! However, we are nothing if not persistent, so with the waterproof jackets zipped up high, we waited it out. Between showers, the cloud was still hanging low which meant that Dan was really struggling to get any good shots. Plus, he was competing with rain droplets on the lens, and a high wind trying to take the tripod. Reluctantly, we gave in and I managed to convince Dan that a lunch at Tweedy’s bar in Grasmere was a fantastic idea (although, to be honest, he didn’t need much persuasion). If you haven’t been to Tweedy’s bar, give it a try next time you’re in Grasmere (but do it before you’ve filled up on Gingerbread!).
After heading back to our cottage in Chapel Stile, we had resigned ourselves to staying in and Dan not being able to get any fabulous pictures. We couldn’t believe our luck when the rain stopped thrashing against the window, the clouds were looking less fierce and some sunlight was trying to break through. It was too late in the day to venture too far, so we walked over to New Bridge to join the old disused road running through the Langdale Valley.
There were several excellent capture points for Dan along this road and some of the pictures he snapped then are actually some of my favourites.
For those who like a flatter walk and prefer to have a pub at the other end, the walk on this road through the Langdale Valley is a leisurely one, and you’ve got a range of pubs at the other end: The Old Dungeon Ghyll, The New Dungeon Ghyll and Stickle Barn.
After the volatile start to the day, we couldn’t believe the images Dan had managed to photograph before the end of the day. The English weather is so changeable!
All the images in this blog are available as high quality prints for you to enjoy in your own home from the Lake District Print Collection.
