Sadly we haven’t had a huge amount of snow fall this year in the Peak District, and any snow that has fallen has cleared fairly quickly. I was pretty keen to capture the Peak District as a winter wonderland, but sadly I didn’t think this was going to happen this year! Thankfully, a window of opportunity opened when we had a period of dry and cold weather following a period of snow fall, and Rushup Edge presented the ideal location!
Given the forecast for the day was dry, I headed out into the Peak District to see what I could capture. As I approached the Longshaw Estate and Higger Tor, I could see that there was very little snow left, I was rather disappointed. Thankfully, as I looked over to Kinder Scout and The Great Ridge, I could see much more snow, so decided to carry on the road to Castleton. As I approached Castleton, I could see the sun had started to burn the snow off The Great Ridge, Lose Hill and much of Mam Tor, so I had to work out quickly where I wanted to go… From previously shooting up on Rushup Edge, and the far side of Mam Tor, I remembered that the sun doesn’t hit this side of the hill and therefore there would be a greater chance of some nice thick and deep snow! I carried on the road up to the National Trust Mam Tor car park to be greeted by some snow! Great!
As I headed up to Rushup Edge and the far side of Mam Tor there was plenty of snow, included some very interesting snow drifts! I knew the perfect spot that would work for this image as I had previously captured Rushup Edge in the summer from the same spot!
I was keen to capture a panoramic image, taking in the whole of the road leading down to Barber Booth. Thankfully, as I setup, there were a couple of breaks in the cloud, leading to a very pleasing backlight to Rushup Edge and the snow. I quickly got myself into gear and captured this 3 photograph panoramic image.
All the images in this blog are available as high quality photographic prints, along with a range of bespoke frames, for you to enjoy in your home. Why not take a look at my full Peak District Print Collection.
